Analgesia for Retrobulbar Block
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background: The injection of retrobulbar block is associated with significant pain and discomfort. Therefore a short-acting IV analgesic before retrobulbar injection has been advocated. Objective: To compare remifentanil, alfentanil and fentanyl in providing analgesia for retrobulbar block injection. Methods: 69 patients were enrolled randomly into three groups of 23 each to receive either Remifentanil 1 g/kg, Alfentanil 20 g/kg or Fentanyl 2 g/kg as an IV bolus dose prior to retrobulbar injection. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded and Numerical Pain Score (NPS) were assessed by a blinded observer. Results: Remifentanil prevented increase in MAP and HR while alfentanil and fentanyl were ineffective in this purpose (p < 0.05). NPS was significantly lower in remifentanil group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Remifentanil 1 g/kg prior to retrobulbar injection From Shiraz Univ. of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran. * Associate Professor, Department of Anesthesiology. ** Assistant Professor, Department off Ophthalmology. *** MD. متن کاملComparison of sedation requirements for cataract surgery under topical anesthesia or retrobulbar block.
PURPOSE Topical anesthesia is increasingly being used for cataract surgery. However, it is believed that topical anesthesia causes an increased risk of intraoperative complications from unrestricted eye movement and insufficient pain control and more need for sedation. It is difficult to compare pain and anxiety experienced by individual patients; therefore, the authors used the method of patie...

The studybySoares et al. 1 published in this edition of the Brazilian Journal of Anesthesiology has aroused old questions about anesthetic techniques for eye surgery: retrobulbar, peribulbar, extraconal, periconal and subtenonian Anesthetic techniques aim at depositing local anesthetics in a given point as from which spread may reach ciliary nerves responsible for eye sensitivity, ciliary gangl...
متن کاملComparing the Effect of Topical Anesthesia and Retrobulbar Block With Intravenous Sedation on Hemodynamic Changes and Satisfaction in Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery (Phaco Method)
BACKGROUND Cataract is one of the most common surgical procedures in the elderly. In most cases, the elderly have cardiac ischemia or chronic coronary diseases, which would lead to more ischemic events during general anesthesia. Therefore, surgeons and anesthetists prefer regional aesthesia to the general one owing to its more advantages and less complications. OBJECTIVES Therefore, this stud...
متن کاملThe effect of post-traumatic-stress-disorder on intra-operative analgesia in a veteran population during cataract procedures carried out using retrobulbar or topical anesthesia: a retrospective study
BACKGROUND A growing proportion of veterans treated at the Veterans Health Administration (VA) have a history of post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD), and there exists a higher rate of PTSD amongst veterans than the general population. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation between PTSD and intra-operative analgesia, intra-operative time, and anesthesia type for cataract sur...
